If you live with someone else, regardless of what they are (family, significant other, friend) you aren't just responsible for making sure your finances are in check. Checking with the other person(s) every once in awhile may seem like checking on a child, but sitting down and being completely open about your finances and being on the same page prevents being blind-sided.
Communication is extremely important.
